When you hear the words “medicine cabinet,” you probably picture plastic bottles, white pills, sugary syrup, and cough drops. We believe that true health starts in the kitchen and the soil. That is why our pantry and herb jars are our medicine cabinet. When we get sick, someone starts coughing, or our skin is raw and cracked from working outside, we don’t head to the pharmacy—we look to the original medicine that God gave us to treat our ailments and heal our bodies.
Here is what we keep stocked at all times through the winter:
- Garlic & Onions: Garlic and onions are packed with antimicrobial compounds and sulfur, making them our go-to for immune support. I have shared that we use onion juice for ear aches and fresh garlic as a natural antibiotic. I am amazed at the things we have treated with these two foods.
- Acerola & Rose Hips: Our ultimate whole-food sources of Vitamin C. Most vitamin C supplements are synthetic or unnaturally isolated and these two fruits are a bioavailable immune support that is very natural.
- Mullein: We recently started using this for cough and lung support. It gently soothes the respiratory tract and clears deep chest congestion.
- Cod Liver Oil: A classic powerhouse for pure vitamins A and D, plus omega-3 fatty acids to keep inflammation at bay. We take this every day and extra with fevers. Fevers deplete vitamin A very quickly and replacing this naturally is critical for preventing serious consequences.
- Grape Leaf Extract: Exceptional for cardiovascular health and packed with antioxidants. A well known herbalist used this with excellent success during covid for a cytokine storm in his patients. I made this just in case, and more recently, we have used this with great results if someone’s lungs feel tight, inflamed, and irritated. Grape leaf extract can help calm that overactive immune response.
🌿 What’s On Our Shelf (For Skin Health)
Medicine isn’t just what you put in your body—it’s also what you put on it. Your skin absorbs everything, which is why we handcrafted these two seasonal essentials:
- Our Organic Pumpkin Spice Soap: Commercial soaps are full of harsh detergents that strip your skin’s natural barrier, leaving it dry and irritated. We formulated this batch with moisturizing, organic ingredients and real pumpkin spices. It brings the cozy scents of fall into your daily routine while keeping your skin deeply hydrated and soft.
- Our Calendula Salve: This is our go to for almost everything. Calendula herb is very popular for skin issues. It’s deeply soothing and speeds up the recovery of dry, chapped winter skin and irritation. It is great for sensitive areas. It’s gentle enough for delicate skin and highly sensitive areas.
There is so much more I wish I could share with you, but I don’t have the time to write a whole book today! My hope is to put all of our natural recipes and family remedies into print in the near future, to pass down to my children, and if I have the courage, I may share it with others too. For now, I’ll keep sharing these little pieces with you here.”
