One of the biggest mistakes I made in the past was not filtering our water for several years. We had tested it for nitrates, but it was a little under the recommended level of treating, so we didn’t worry about it. My thinking now is we probably should have been doing something to remove those nitrates, and I have to wonder what other toxins could have been in there. In our modern world, most of the water is contaminated with something harmful. Depending upon where you live you might be getting prescription drugs, nitrates, pesticides, heavy metals, and the list goes on. Thankfully a friend shared what she was doing several years ago to naturally filter her water, and we quickly bought our own, and love it. In all transparency I want to say that I am not being compensated to share this product with you. I am simply sharing another piece of how we get the toxins out.
We use the 4-gallon Berkey system to filter our water. This system is, “Equipped with Black Berkey Purification Elements reduce up to 99.999% of viruses and 99.9999% of pathogenic bacteria, while also removing or dramatically reducing protozoa, trihalomethanes, inorganic minerals, heavy metals, pharmaceuticals, pesticides, VOCs, petroleum products, perfluorinated chemicals, rust, silt, sediment and even radiologicals,” according to the Berkey company. Our large family will need to fill this up once or sometimes twice a day. We really enjoy the taste of the water, and the thing that I love the most is this filtering system retains most of the beneficial minerals in the water. I also like that I can easily clean the filters and reuse them for a long time. It’s a great way to ditch that bottled water that is known to contain harmful chemicals, is costly, and produces a lot of waste to our environment.
Talking with my family, they all recommend getting the largest Berkey they have. The biggest system is 6 gallons and may be too big for some families, because you want the water to stay fresh tasting. You will be surprised by how much water you go through. Kailey said she didn’t like the taste of the water, because it didn’t taste like anything at first, but now she likes it much better than our tap water. I guess taste buds adjust. One of the problems that some people report is overflowing their Berkey and having it spill everywhere. Thankfully we haven’t done this yet. In order to avoid this, we always use a 1 gallon jar and fill this up four times. This way we don’t put too much water in, and have a mess.
Do you filter your water? We love to hear from you!
Our family has learned to slow down, make careful observations of what heals/damages, decrease modern distractions, take a little more time preparing our food, and most importantly to seek the Lord’s wisdom. It’s a daily struggle and it never goes perfectly, but we just keep trying to do the best we can. If you are working toward a more traditional, clean, whole foods diet, and would like to take small steps to get there, then you are at the right place. “Week one was Get Your Salt Better,” week 2 was “The Power of Water,” and this week we are talking about removing toxins from our water. Join us next Tuesday for Get Your . . . Better.
I’m not sure i trust the Berkey company’s claims even though we have and use one. I thought the fresh taste that we got from Berkey was gone in two weeks! We actual bought more filters!! We only use two black filters, and don’t use the fluoride filter which I need to change…. For my peace of mind we use that but I also bought a distiller. I try to distill two gallons a day. It’s in the basement because some don’t like the noise it makes while distilling or the heat it produces in the summer time. I actually have a Pure filter on the sink too that I use to fill an empty distilled water bottle and haul it down there, lol. Maybe I’ll get back to distilling the Berkey water but the smell coming from the bottom of the distiller using thePure filter is really gross, to the point i actually add activated charcoal to the chamber water before distilling. A little obsessive, I know, haha! The crystal clear ice cubes from distilled water are gorgeous!!
Hey Jill! Thank you so much for sharing your experience! I wonder if it would help if you let your Berkey completely run out of water (even tipping it to get the last of the water out). Not sure they recommend tipping it, and it drives my husband crazy, but we have been doing it since we got it a few years ago. Ha! Our water always tastes really fresh, and I have to wonder if that helps. Definitely let us know if you figure it out. 🙂 Thanks and have a great day!
