I thought I was using a “natural” toothpaste until one day I looked at the warning label on the back that stated, “If you accidentally swallow product contact a health care provider.” I was horrified! After so many experiences like this, I should have been researching and reading the label on my “natural” toothpaste instead of assuming that because it was produced by a “natural company” it was okay. As I searched for another brand of toothpaste, I discovered that most toothpastes on the market have this same warning label! I quit using the toothpaste shortly after and started experimenting with recipes. I really didn’t like any of my recipes until I tried this recipe from a biological dentist. I modified it a little and skipped the water to make it easy and safe to store, mix, and use. I share my recipe here if you would like to give it a try, or we would be happy to help you out by selling this same recipe to you. Get in touch with me if you would like to save by buying in bulk. Since I have been using this product, I noticed I haven’t had bleeding gums (something I have had for as long as I can remember), but it could also be coincidence.
I will admit that I HATED tooth powder the first time I used it. The jar went back in my cupboard for a few weeks until I ran out of my other homemade toothpaste. I was so busy at the time that I pulled the tooth powder out and started using it again. After a few days I got used to the texture and the weird feeling in my mouth and then I really started liking it. Now that I have been using it for over a year, I realize that my teeth have never felt so clean. I love knowing that if one of my kids accidentally swallows it, I don’t have to call poison control!!
Interesting Fact: It is recommended by the American Dental Association to brush for at least 2 minutes. In nursing school, I learned that placing a nitroglycerin pill under a patient’s tongue would often relieve angina (chest pain) in as little as 3 to 5 minutes. I also observed this several times. This little pill works by dilating (opening up) the coronary arteries. It’s so effective in the mouth that I have to wonder if putting poison in our mouth is a good idea.
Our family has learned to slow down, make careful observations of what heals/damages, get rid of the distractions, take a little more time preparing our food, and most importantly to seek the Lord’s wisdom. It’s a daily struggle and it never goes perfectly, but we just keep trying to do the best we can. If you are working toward a more traditional, clean, whole foods diet, and would like to take small steps to get there, then you are at the right place. Week one was get your salt right, week 2 was get your sleep right, weeks 3, 4, 5, 6, and 7 were get your fats right, we had several weeks about seasonings and herbs, some important discussion about natural sweeteners, talked about Forgiveness, hopefully we got our eggs right, learned about the benefits of pastured, clean meats, considered getting mercury removed, and we continue to get the toxins out of our mouth this week. Join us next Tuesday for Get Your . . . Right.
