Need Some Travelling Ideas?

A few weeks ago, our family took a trip to the Hastings Museum. The most important goal of the day was actually to pick up some seeds from Green Cover Seeds, but since I like to multitask and get the most out of one trip (just ask my husband) ? we stopped at the Museum on our way. I had planned to do more, but maybe I’m learning that you can’t do everything in one day! Ha!

I get asked by a lot of people how we travel and still eat. Is there somewhere we like to eat out or do we bring our own? To be honest the last time we ate somewhere was over a year ago. I figure we eat out about once or twice a year. I am always disappointed in the quality of the food and have discovered that everyone feels better if I just bring all of our food and water. Here are some helpful ideas if you would like to start bringing your own food places.

Thanks Kailey Mentink for taking this amazing picture at the Museum!

Over a month ago we cut up our 2 ½ year old steer that we hadn’t been able to get into a locker. Let’s just say he was huge, but that’s a story for another day. Anyway, that same day, I mixed up a large amount of meat for summer sausage and hot dogs with my own organic homemade seasoning mixes and then later stuffed these in natural casings and smoked them. They turned out fantastic! I was so excited to be able to add the summer sausage to our lunch plans, because I knew the meat was very high quality, and that no harmful preservatives, toxins, or questionable ingredients (some even in certified organic products) were put into our food, so we would all still feel great.

We packed up this summer sausage with some carrots and homemade ranch, yogurt, cheese, and homemade sourdough crackers. All of the work was done the day before and after chores and our usual breakfast were completed, and the house was back in order, we were out the door by 8:30 (30 minutes later than planned, but not bad!). While it does take some planning and extra work, I have found that travelling (and being exposed to all the chemicals in almost every building) really wears me out if I don’t eat highly digestible, nutrient dense foods, so it’s totally worth a little extra work. The homemade summer sausage was a very special treat and everyone was so excited to eat our lunch that nobody even mentioned eating out.

In the morning, before we leave to go somewhere, I like to put a lamb, beef, or pork roast with carrots and potatoes in the crock pot for an easy meal when we get home. The last thing I want to do when I walk in the door is think about what I’m going to make for supper! Here are some ideas of other things we like to bring when we are on the road.

  1. Homemade Soup (I bought stainless steel thermoses to keep this hot)
  2. Sourdough Bread and Cheese for an easy sandwich
  3. Soaked Granola, popcorn, fresh vegetables, dried fruit, and soaked nuts for sides or snacks
  4. Ham, Roast, Chicken, or Tuna Sandwiches
  5. Super Nachos or Tacos (I put the taco meat in a couple thermoses to keep warm)
  6. Cold chicken, beef, or lamb pizza

Hopefully I can get more ideas and recipes on our website soon. I love sharing these energy producing foods with you! My heart aches to see so many people (even the very young) suffering with chronic diseases. Do you ever bring your own food when you are travelling? Could you share some healthy meals that you like to bring? We would love to hear from you!
