With news of a new measles outbreak going on right now, the media as always loves to spread concern and panic. However, we know that nothing in this world is perfect and ultimate control belongs to God. Because God is sovereign, He gives us both the wisdom to care for our health and the peace to walk completely in faith rather than fear.
If you are looking for peace and a helpful perspective on health, you should listen to Episode 593 of the Wise Traditions podcast with Dr. Ben Edwards. He shares his story from a previous West Texas outbreak, and it completely changes how you look at these situations.
Dr. Edwards actually entered that community following the heavily publicized death of a seven-year-old Mennonite girl. While the news blamed measles, Dr. Edwards explains that her death was actually caused by medical malpractice in the hospital. She was tragically given the wrong antibiotics for community-acquired pneumonia, which is what caused her to pass away.
When we hear about an illness spreading in a Mennonite community, we usually make a lot of guesses. We might think these families are super healthy, live off the land, eat great home-cooked food, and use natural herbs to stay well.
But Dr. Ben treated hundreds of these children, and he says that is just a myth.
The truth is that many people in these communities eat the same modern food as everyone else. They eat a standard American diet full of boxed snacks, white sugar, and white flour. Because of this, their bodies were already weak and stressed when they got sick.
In this episode, Dr. Ben explains how he helped these families by supporting the bodies God gave them. He gave the kids high-quality cod liver oil and natural Vitamin C. The children responded beautifully and recovered quickly.
He also talks about:
-How fear and stress actually shut down our immune system and make it harder to heal.
-Why keeping our bodies strong inside matters more than worrying about germs outside.
-The huge media attack and pressure he faced just for trying to help sick kids with good nutrition.
This story is a great reminder that true health is about doing our best to take care of our bodies every single day, while ultimately trusting in God Almighty.
