Quote of the Week and Cleansing Update

The processed foods we eat are often practically devoid of proper nutrients and fiber. Foods are adulterated with chemicals, additives, preservatives, dyes, and other artificial ingredients to keep them beautiful, tasty, fluffy, and perpetually free from the ravages of shelf spoilage. The cleaning products and personal care products we use are also full of toxic chemicals. . . and environmental pollutants abound. . . Our high- stress lifestyles shift our nervous systems from a calm, healthy parasympathetic state to a stressed, fight-or flight, adrenaline- driven, sympathetic condition. . . We can help them out with a good cleanse.

My Thoughts on This Quote

In our modern world, sometimes it feels like we don’t have a choice but to embrace this damaging lifestyle, but I want to encourage you that it is possible to get back to our roots of nutrient-dense, traditional eating, a slower, lower stress lifestyle, and decreased exposure to toxins in our environment, but it will take work. Because we are all being exposed today, more than ever, our family has benefited from cleansing in the last year. I have been wanting to share this for several months with you, but before I shared, I wanted to do as much research as I could on this subject. I also wanted to observe how this worked for us for a longer period of time.

Even after my research and observation, I still don’t feel confident in sharing this knowledge that I have gained with you, (there is so much conflicting advice out there from natural practitioners that are very knowledgeable and helpful) so I decided to just share what we did and encourage you to do your own research. Please note that it’s not recommended to cleanse during pregnancy or breastfeeding and if you are on any medications you should consult with your doctor for interactions.

Starting the Cleanse

When it comes to cleansing the most important thing to consider is that you want to do it in a certain order. No matter what kind of cleanse you do, it is critical to start with a colon cleanse, so that your body is efficiently getting rid of waste before adding even more. It’s best to have at least 2 bowl movements a day during cleansing. Once the bowels were working well, we added the parasite cleanse. This ensures that as the parasites die and release their toxins, that they are getting out of your body rather than causing even more problems by circulating around your system. One may notice some die-off symptoms during this time. Next, it’s important to do a kidney, liver, and finally a blood cleanse. There are so many other cleanses out there (heavy metals, candida, lymph cleanses, etc.). I’m sure these would be helpful too, but we haven’t done any of these yet.

Our Process

I decided to make my own formulas in order to get the best quality ingredients with no additives. I also wanted to use only food and herbs. I’m sure there are plenty of good formulas on the market for those that don’t have time to make their own though. For the colon cleanse, I made a formula of 25% cape aloe powder, 20% senna leaf, 20% senna pods, 20% cascara, 5% ginger, 5% Oregon grape root, 3% garlic, and 2% cayenne. This worked well and everyone felt very good with this. I also recommended doing Epson salt baths as a form of detox. Some people advise using food-grade clay or charcoal to help bind the toxins for removal, but I didn’t think of that at the time.

Once the colon cleanse was working, we started the parasite cleanse. We followed Dr. Hulda Clark’s parasite instructions here. I was able to make my own wormwood and clove capsules, and we also made a homemade walnut tincture. This saved a lot of money, since so many of us were doing the program. For the walnut tincture, we harvested green walnuts that had dropped from our walnut trees, filled up a half gallon jar with them, and then infused them with vodka strength alcohol. We let this sit for 3 days, shook it several times, strained it, and it was ready to go. It’s so easy to find green walnuts this time of year. I have observed that the walnut tincture is good for yeast as well.

After the colon cleanse and parasite cleanse we did a kidney cleanse where we took 1 Tablespoon of celery seed that had been infused with boiling water for a few hours. The next day we started a liver cleanse which included several days of drinking apple juice followed by olive oil and lemon juice. Everyone did fine with this, but after more research, I’m not planning to do this again. In the future we will use herbs to cleanse and restore the liver. Finally, we made a blood cleanse with 35% red clover, 35% sheep sorrel, and 30% red root. Unfortunately, we haven’t tried this yet, but I hope to in the future.

Our Story

The results of our cleanses were really good (especially the colon, parasite, and kidney cleanses). Our oldest daughter has been able to start eating several ingredients from our farm that she had been having reactions to. That has been the biggest blessing. A few people noticed parasites coming out. I noticed a big difference in energy, a reduction in my cough, and relief from bladder/kidney symptoms I was experiencing at that time. I think everyone agreed that you just “feel good” doing it. I think it’s best to do this cleanse a couple of times a year, but everyone is going to be different. Some people may need more.

When looking to the past, I found it interesting that people would prioritize a parasite cleanse each spring and fall. They would also be eating better quality food and herbs that would naturally cleanse the body as well. There’s a lot of pride in our nation, and many experts believe that parasites are only a problem in third world countries. As clean as we all are, I’m convinced that this is simply not true. There are so many symptoms that parasites can cause, and instead of cleansing people of them, we try to cover up the symptoms with medications that simply block those symptoms, but don’t address the actual problem.  We should prioritize a nutrient-dense, traditional diet, reduce our exposure to toxins, and start saying “no” to high stress lifestyles, but even when we do those things, we can still benefit from cleansing.

There are so many cleanses out there and what is good and works well for one person may not for another. Have you benefited from doing a cleanse? We would love to hear from you!
