The Truckers are Coming!

By Cory Mentink

Hi folks, if you’ve been listening to the mainstream media over the last several days, you may or may not have heard about the Canadian truckers freedom convoy which reached Ottawa last Saturday.  The convoy stretched 100 miles and took about 2 hours to pass any given point.  The news media has somewhat ignored the 57,000 or so truckers and the Canadian government has tried to act like this is a fringe group, not a good representation of the Canadian people.  One Canadian news source did a poll of the Canadian people and approximately 76% of respondents support what the truckers are doing. So what are the demands of the truckers? End all mandates for everyone in Canada.  In other words, “We’re done, leave us alone.” Seems like a good cause to me.

Why is this probably the most important news story out there that no one in the news media is giving much attention to?  Because this is likely to spread, not only in Canada, but around the world.  There are already people organizing convoys in the United States and other countries.  I fully support these guys and gals in what they are doing, when liberty increases for one liberty increases for all.  But are we prepared to support them when this starts affecting us where we live?

More than 71% of goods are moved around the country by trucks, that includes food, fuel, parts, and yes even toilet paper.  If the trucker rebellion carries on for a while and spreads, we are going to see shortages like we have never seen before.  I want to encourage you to make sure you are prepared so that this movement can be successful.

First I want to acknowledge that God is sovereign and there is nothing out of his control. He is good and His providence is sufficient and abundant.  He has also given us wisdom to prepare for seasons and tough time, Proverbs 6:6 comes to mind “Go to the ant O sluggard; consider her ways and be wise…”

We should have food stored up for ourselves, preferably 60 days’ worth.  I’m not talking about running out and buying a bunch of MREs or freeze-dried meals, I’m talking about making a deep pantry.  We eat what we store and store what we eat.  Look at what you and your family eats in a week, then a month and start buying extra of the ingredients that you need to make those meals, keep doing this until you have enough stored to not need to go to the grocery store for 60 days.  Look at filling up your deep freezer too! If you only eat fast food, I can’t help you there.

We should also have some fuel stored up for emergency use (along with a generator, but we won’t go there today). An easy way to store fuel if you have the space, is to purchase 12 gas cans, one for each month of the year.  Mark them 1-12 and fill them up, at the beginning of each month that corresponds to the number on the can (2 = February) when you need to fill up your vehicle anyway, dump the gas in to your tank and take the can with you to fill up with fresh gas.  This way you never have gas that is more than a year old, this keeps it fresh and in an emergency you have 60 gallons to use as needed.

There are many other things that we can do to be more prepared, these are just a couple that came to mind.  I don’t know that things will get bad because of the current or future supply chain disruptions or even a bad storm, but being prepared is a good thing even if times are good.  If you have extra food, you can be a blessing to others or at least not a burden on strained resources during an emergency.  So remember to thank all the truckers that you run into or know personally, they help keep America rolling on!
