Week 12: Get Your Meats Better and Unique Pastured Meats

Have you tried goat, goose, rabbit, guinea, or duck? I think these are great options to raise or buy from a pasture based, regenerative or organic farmer. I had no desire to try any of these meats, but my kids and husband enjoy trying a variety of food, so I have tried all of these meats except for guinea. I will admit that I was pleasantly surprised by the taste of all the meats, and I will probably eat more in the future, but my favorite meats are still beef, pork, chicken, turkey, and lamb for now. I’m a little slow with change.

What I love about goat, goose, rabbit, and duck is how sustainable they can be. Goats raised on pasture can be raised without grain, and geese will be able to get by with very little grains. Ducks and rabbits will require some grain, but can get a lot of their food from pasture as well. Raised with good quality grains and on pasture, these meats will contain a lot of healthy fat, vitamins, minerals, CLAs, and more. We raise all of these animals except rabbits (we have plenty of wild rabbits) simply to add diversity to the farm. We love the added benefits they provide for weed management and pest control. In closing I will say that goats are really fun to raise, but my husband always says that if something will hold water, it will hold a goat.

Our family has learned to slow down, make careful observations of what heals/damages, decrease modern distractions, take a little more time preparing our food, and most importantly to seek the Lord’s wisdom. It’s a daily struggle, and it never goes perfectly, but we just keep trying to do the best we can. If you are working toward a more traditional, clean, whole foods diet and lifestyle, and would like to take small steps to get there, then you are at the right place. Week one was Get your Salt Right, week 2 was The Power of Water and we learned about removing toxins from our water in week 3, week 4 was Get Your Sleep Better, 5, 6, and 7 were Get Your Fats Better, we got our eggs better, and now we will be getting our meats better. Join us next Tuesday for Get Your . . . Better.
